Short teachings on suffering and what helps.
Written and read by therapist and meditator
David Gabriel Siegel.
Nothing is fundamentally wrong with life,
but something is fundamentally misunderstood.
And that misunderstanding leads to unintended consequences we wish weren’t happening.
Things like anxiety, burnout, real human suffering. To find relief,
we must first correct this misunderstanding.
We must get clear on what the problem actually is.
Spoiler alert: it’s not pain, or sadness, grief, or fear.
Its our unconscious attempts to avoid these human experiences.
That is the cause of our anxiety, burnout, suffering. If we can develop the skills to coexist with the inevitable discomforts of being human,
rather than exhausting ourselves perpetually trying to avoid them,
we will have ample and sufficient energy to live peacefully, joyfully, and well,
the key is… just not always comfortably. There are practices that exist that train these skills,
meditation being one of them.
But you don’t necessarily need to meditate to find relief,
you just need to understand and practice the moves meditation trains.Learning to let go of thoughts.
Learning to direct your attention.
Learning to hold steady, be still, stay present.
These aren’t relaxation techniques,
they are endurance exercises,
to help you better navigate the battles of modern living.
Consistently practicing them leads to a stronger and more capable you,
and I can’t wait to see what that version of you looks like.
I’m David Gabriel Siegel.
A therapist, meditator, and human who still has difficult days.I’ve spent my life trying to overcome my personal struggles with health, rumination, heart break, addiction.
I haven’t figured out a way to live without pain, sadness, or fear… yet,
but I have stumbled upon the possibility of truly living well, despite these things. My training as a therapist helped to a degree.
Wisdom from yoga and meditative traditions, even more.
But nothing has guided me so steadily in my growth as the firm hand of my own suffering. This work is a collection of the insights I encountered on my path towards well-being.
I hope they help you on your own path.

If my work resonates with you, I’d love to hear from you.
